Bad Breath Is A Huge Turn-Off And An Unpleasant Experience

Bad breath is a nightmare for every one. The person who has it and the person who has to bear the smell. It is evident by all the advertisements that glorify the products such as mouthwashes, toothpastes with added mint flavour, chewing gums, etc that help in fighting bad breath.

But to understand, bad breath is not something that can be tackled by these temporary products. Yes, they do help in curbing it for sometime but it is the underlying medical or health issue that needs to be taken care of.


There is largely no symptom, except the obvious one which is that the person next to you can smell it while you talk or even breathe. The intensity and the smell of the breath will depend on the cause or the underlying source. It can actually be a symptom for many other medical and health problems such as indigestion or tooth decay.

Causes of bad breath

There can be several causes which can include lifestyle habits, having certain foods or some health conditions. It has been mostly seen that the bad breath is due to having poor or inconsistent dental hygiene. The causes include:

Biological when we eat food, the teeth and saliva help in breaking down the food particles. These food particles can be in between and around the teeth which allows bacteria to act upon it that results in a foul odour. As mentioned earlier, certain foods such as onions can give a bad breath, also garlic and some spices have the same effect.

  1. Tobacco products:

These products are the killers. Bad breath is obviously one of the resultant of using these product. Smoker’s breath, as they call it, is an unpleasant odour which is almost permanent. Heavy smokers have that odour even while they breathe, and as tobacco can be a cause of gum diseases, it adds to the foul breath. But foul breath or odour are the least of the problems for the people who smoke or use tobacco products as it leads to cancer.

  1. Poor dental hygiene:

One of themes common causes of having a bad or foul breath is to not maintain a proper dental hygiene. The most basic way to maintain dental cleanliness is to brush daily as it helps removing the plaque that builds up. Plaque is a bacteria that is sticky and colourless that form on the teeth which is known to cause a medical condition called Periodontitis. Also changing the brush periodically and keeping the dentures or retainers clean helps in not letting any bacteria do much harm to the teeth, gums and mouth.

  1. Medications:

Some medicines have an indirect side effect to contribute to a dry mouth. This can result in having a bad breath or a foul odour.

  1. Other causes:

There are a number of infections and diseases that can cause a bad breath. These can include cancers, tooth decay, gum diseases, mouth sores and metabolic disorders, reflux disease or GERD. Occasionally it might also happen that there are formations of small or minute stones in the tonsils. These stones are covered in bacteria and these bacteria can cause or result in producing an odour which contributes to it.


As simple as it sounds, the dentist is most likely to smell the breath from your mouth to ascertain the intensity and kind of smell. The dentist will also smell the odour of the breath exhaled from the nose which also helps in the diagnosis. It so happens that the tongue, mostly the back part, is the source of the smell. So the dentist would prefer to scrape it to know the odour emanating from the scraped residue.


As it is being repeatedly emphasised, maintaining a good dental hygiene can help in not having a bad breath. And even if you do have a bad breath, it can be reversed, by following a good cleaning dental discipline.

To reduce or completely stop having a bad breath there are certain measures that can be taken which may include:

  1. Mouth rinses and toothpastes:

These products can be helpful in the cases where the odour in the breath is occasional and not very intentse. But if the bacterial growth is high, then the dentist will recommend an anti-bacterial agent containing toothpaste. This will help in killing the bacteria that causes the plaque build up ion the mouth.

  1. Treatment of dental disease:

For any underlying disease, or medical and health condition the best solution is to visit a licensed medical practitioner right away. A periodontist is helpful for gum related diseases that can cause the teeth to be pulled away from the gums. This can result in leaving deep pockets which can be filled with leftover food particles. This would allow the bacteria to grow on them causing the odour.
