Hypertension? 6 Natural Remedies For High Blood Pressure

This World Hypertension Day 2019, alternative medicine expert Dr Jonathan D’Souza has chalked up a checklist of natural remedies that can help lower high blood pressure. A silent killer, prescription drugs are often advised to control your hypertension, but they sometimes cause side-effects such as dizziness, cramps in the legs and insomnia.

Herbs have been traditionally used to not only treat hypertension, but also a wide variety of diseases. What’s more, they are extremely affordable and easily available in your kitchen, or at the supermarket.

Initiated by The World Hypertension League, every year May 17 is observed as World Hypertension Day. In 2019, the theme for the day is ‘Know Your Numbers‘.

High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) occurs when the pressure of the blood flow through the blood vessels increases to unhealthy levels. Blood pressure is measured by taking into account the amount of blood passing through the blood vessels and the resistance it meets while the heart is pumping. The goal of World Hypertension Day 2019 is to increase awareness about high blood pressure (BP) in populations across the world.

Causes Of Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

While hypertension can be genetic and is closely linked to your family’s medical history, there are many other lifestyle factors that can cause high blood pressure. These include, but are not limited to:

  1. Sedentary or largely inactive lifestyle

  2. Obesity, or being unhealthily overweight

  3. Smoking

  4. Chewing tobacco

  5. High sodium (salt) levels in food

  6. Binge drinking or alcoholism

  7. Stress

  8. Thyroid disorder

  9. Kidney disease

Lower Your High Blood Pressure With Natural Remedies

1. Garlic (Allium Sativum)

Used since ancient times for both culinary and medicinal use, these pungent pods contain volatile oils that are rich in sulfur compounds that give it a pungent odor. Garlic contains a compound called Allicin that has anti-fungal (particularly against Candida albicans), anti-parasitic (effective against major intestinal parasites such as Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia), anti-bacterial (Gram negative and Gram-positive bacteria) and antiviral properties.

It is effective in improving heart health and lowering bad cholesterol. Also, garlic helps relax and dilate blood vessels that allows blood to flow more freely and helping reduce blood pressure.

Directions To Use:

Crush two small cloves of raw garlic and consume with a glass of warm water on an empty stomach. Alternatively, you may take a garlic supplements 250 – 500 mg (pills or powdered extract) three times daily after meals.

2. Celery Seeds (Apium graveolens)

Celery has diuretic and cleansing properties that assist in controlling blood pressure by throwing excess salt out of the body. A study found that celery juice effectively reduced blood pressure in 14 out of 16 patients.

Directions To Use:

Prepare a glass of fresh celery juice. Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to provide relief from dizziness, headache and shoulder pain associated with hypertension.

3. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

The anti-hypertensive effect of hibiscus is attributed to special compounds called polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds have vasorelaxant properties (ability to dilate blood vessels).

Directions To Use:

Brew a herbal tea using dried hibiscus flowers.

4. Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Basil extract is rich in eugenol, a compound that affects endothelins levels (a protein that constricts blood vessels) and helps lower blood pressure.

Directions To Use:

Sprinkle five to six crushed basil leaves on your salads or soups.

5. Flaxseeds (Linum usitatissimum)

Flaxseeds are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Flaxseeds contain high amounts of arginine and glutamine—amino acids that boost immunity and prevent heart disease. Research shows that daily consumption of flaxseeds can reduce cholesterol levels by 9 to 18 percent.

Flaxseeds are the richest source of lignin, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (a plant antioxidant), that helps lower blood pressure. A research study done over a period of 6 months on people with high blood pressure found that systolic blood pressure (the pressure on the arteries when your heart pumps blood) was reduced by 10mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (the pressure on the arteries when your heart relaxes between beats) was reduced by 7mmHg.

Directions To Use:

Sprinkle a tablespoon of flaxseeds on your morning bowl of cereals or oatmeal. You can also add it to your fresh juice or smoothie.

6. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has more antioxidants than blueberries and acai berries. These antioxidants prevent the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, helping increase HDL (good) cholesterol and reducing LDL.

Research shows that consuming dark chocolate twice a week reduced the risk of developing calcified plaque in the arteries by 32 percent. In another research study, it was observed that people who ate dark chocolate more than 5 times a week reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 57 percent.

Dark chocolate contain flavonols that stimulate the arterial lining (endothelium) to make nitric oxide gas that reduces resistance to blood flow and helps lower blood pressure. More research indicates that dark chocolate can effectively reduce blood pressure and improve blood circulation.

Directions To Use:

Bite into a piece of dark chocolate every day to keep your blood pressure under control.
