PCOS Treatment: Manage Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Naturally, Explained By Dr Vaishnavi

PCOS treatment is an ongoing process. For a PCOS treatment without medicines or naturally is completely dependant on better lifestyle habits and food choices. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a lifestyle disorder and there is no permanent cure for it.

At its core PCOS is a problem of hormonal and metabolic imbalance. PCOS develops in a woman for one or both reasons:

  1. Hyperandrogenemia: This is a condition in which there is an excess of male hormones in circulation in the woman’s body.

  2. Hyperinsulinemia or Insulin Resistance: This is a condition in which the body does not respond to normal insulin levels and will require higher insulin amount than the usual so as to keep the blood sugar in the normal range.

In this video Dr. Vaishnavi, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist explains how PCOS treatment can be achieved by keeping the PCOS symptoms in check by changing certain lifestyle habits. These positive changes can even be implemented by women to prevent having PCOS.

It is rightly said that prevention is better than cure. Hence in a genetically prone population like us, Indians, it is always better and wise to adopt a healthy lifestyle by inculcating better habits. This ensures that our body is free from majority of the diseases and conditions, and we do not land up with disorders like PCOS, high blood pressure, high blood sugar or dislepedimias.

Now, the same lifestyle measures which we ought to have to ensure a healthy body can also be implemented once PCOS is detected to keep the symptoms under control. PCOS symptoms can only be kept in check by corrective measures. These corrective measures should not be discontinued on improvement of the condition as the symptoms may relapse.

PCOS Treatment Through Lifestyle Management

Lifestyle management is the primary modality in PCOS treatment or even in preventing it. This involves a more disciplined and healthier approach towards the day-to-day choices. These choices should include a balanced diet with exercise, weight management, and adequate rest. All these are given their due importance and should be followed in a routined manner.

Eating Habits:

When planning your meals and in-between snack always choose a balanced diet which is high in fibre. It is highly emphasised to have natural foods over refined foods. Also, the amount of salt, sugar and fats should be limited. Foods having natural sugars, and good fat are the right choice to have which can fulfil any craving. Most importantly abstain from smoking and alcohol. Besides it’s already known harmful effects to the body, these poisonous things can flare up the symptoms of PCOS.

Physical Activity:

Moderate intensity of exercises and aerobic activities should be included in the routine. At least 30 minutes everyday and about 5 days every week of exercise is recommended. Also do weight training exercises to build muscle in the body, at least twice a week. A good habit to include in your daily routine can be incorporating yoga and mediation.

Also make sure not to sit for prolonged periods of time. During your work schedule if it involves sitting at one place take a break and walk around after every 1-1.5 hours. Try taking the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator as much as possible. Spend lesser amounts of time watching tv and on video gadgets, instead indulge in some outdoor sports, or playing with your children. A great way to get fresh air and have some form of physical activity is to take a walk around the park. But what should definitely be kept in mind is that at the end of the day adequate rest is required by the body. This rest time is needed to nourish the body and the mind for a fresh and healthy start the next day.
