Sprain First Aid, Its Symptoms And The Risk Factors

Sprain is a medical condition in which the ligament is stretched beyond its natural capacity and/or gets torn. A ligament is a fibrous tissue that connects two bones and is present in the joint. Ankle is considered to be the most common joint to have a sprain. It should be known that a fracture, a strain and a sprain are three different conditions.

Follow these first aid procedures steps during a sprain:

  1. RICE procedure

  2. R – Rest

  3. I – Ice

  4. C – Compression

  5. E – Elevation

  6. Take weight off the sprained limb and avoid movement for the first hour.

  7. Rest it with the assistance of a sling or crutches if the patient needs to move around.

  8. Wrap ice in a cloth and apply to the sprained area for 20 minutes in every 1 hour, until the inflammation decreases.

  9. Use an elastic sprain bandage or compression sleeve to prevent sudden jerks, displacement, or movement of the sprained body part.

  10. A sprain pain reliever, in the form of spray or cream, can be applied before wrapping the bandage. These are commonly available at any medical store or a pharmacy.

  11. Elevate the sprained body part above heart level, for e.g., keep the sprained leg or arm on a pillow.

Important – Immediately seek medical help or contact the nearest hospital if the condition is life threatening.

Signs and Symptoms

Depending in the severity of the injury, the symptoms or signs vary. These are:

  1. Pain

  2. Swelling

  3. Bruising

  4. Movement restriction of the affected or the injured body part i.e limited ability to move the affected joint

Risk Factors

  1. Environmental – Surfaces or areas that are slippery or have an uneven terrain pose a risk for sprains to occur.

  2. Fatigue – When the body is fatigue the muscles are not performing upto it’s capability to support a joint.

  3. Poor wearables – Footwear is really important for a person to avoid sprains as old or slippery footwear can be a cause for a sprain. High and very thin heels’ footwear is also not recommended to wear if there is a lot of movement involved.
